Description
LOPA is a simplified form of risk assessment. It is used to comply with industry standards and regulatory expectations. The risk of hazard scenarios is evaluated and compared with risk tolerance criteria to decide if existing protection layers, or safeguards, are adequate, and if additional safeguards are needed. LOPA considers only safeguards that are determined to be Independent Protection Layers (IPLs). The qualification of safeguards as IPLs is the central part of performing LOPA studies.
This technical briefing provides guidelines for qualifying safeguards as IPLs. It is intended for practitioners who are new to LOPA studies and those who need a refresher on the latest approaches. Attendees receive an electronic copy of the technical briefing materials.
